Silence of the Cicadas is the third episode of season 1 of CBS's Zoo. It originally aired on July 14, 2015.

Summary[]

Gaspard Alves takes Chloe to Slovenia to look into a pack of dogs in the area murdering several people. Gaspard tells Chloe to look at the case like she would if the killers were human, and she comes to the realization that the dogs are honing their skills in killing. Gaspard asks Chloe to join him.

In Japan, Jackson and Abe meet with Minako Oz, the woman who was married to Jackson's father during his breakdown and subsequent suicide. They learn of his research facility on an island thirty kilometers outside of Fukushima, his "ghost of Christmas Future". Their plane is attacked by bats and Minako and the pilot both die in the crash. Jackson and Abe, now stranded on a radioactive island, continue their search for information on Robert Oz's research. The two manage to find his rundown facility after being faced with the grizzly sight of two horses with their eyes removed. Jackson believes his father came to the island in order to study the accelerated mutations of the animals exposed to radiation, and they see evidence that the horses had the same defiant pupil as the lions, which could be why Robert Oz removed the horses' eyes. Jackson and Abe realize they've been on the island too long when noticing the radiation detector is no longer working. A helicopter comes just in time and Gaspard is who steps out to greet them.

Jamie convinces a reluctant Mitch to fly with her to New Orleans in order to present their findings to Senator Dixon Vaughn. When there, however, the car rental agency in the airport immediately declines Jamie's company card and she's forced to come clean to Mitch that she was fired by The Telegraph. Mitch is persuaded into staying to speak with the senator after Jamie shows him her mother's gravestone and tells him how her hometown was ruined by Reiden Global. The meeting with Senator Vaughn goes poorly, and he turns the two away. Drowning their sorrows in a nearby bar, Mitch encounters Gaspard and agrees to come with him as long as Jamie can come, too.

All together, Jackson, Abe, Jamie, and Mitch meet Thomas Delavane. Both he and Gaspard detail multiple incidents around the world where animals have violently and uncharacteristically attacked humans. They believe Robert Oz's theories were likely correct. Chloe is brought in and named by Delavane as the team leader and his proxy for decision-making in the field. Their goal as a team is to figure out what is happening to the animals and find a way to stop it.

In a prison in Biloxi, Mississippi, an inmate named Evan Lee Hartley agrees to meet with Lucy Blanchard, the widow of a man he'd killed. After meeting with Mrs. Blanchard, Hartley is let out into the yard. While he stands there, the prison is attacked by wolves who kill the prison guards and other inmates. Only Hartley remains untouched, staring at the wolves as they howl just outside the fence.
